What the report says

India opened their two-Test series in Sri Lanka with a 165-run victory in Galle, taking a 1-0 lead after the first match, which Al Jazeera reported was India’s 600th Test. Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar was the key figure, finishing with 10 wickets in only his second Test. He took four wickets in Sri Lanka’s first innings and followed that with a 6-55 in the second, helping dismiss the hosts for 206 after lunch on the final day.

Sri Lanka were set a target of 372 and struggled to sustain partnerships in the fourth innings. Captain Dhananjaya de Silva made 59, while Sonal Dinusha was the most consistent batter across both innings, but the rest of the lineup could not build around them. India’s bowlers applied pressure early on the final day and then accelerated through the lower order, with Suthar taking the final four wickets for seven runs.

India captain Shubman Gill described the win as satisfying and praised Suthar’s form, while de Silva said batting last in Galle was difficult. Al Jazeera also noted that Devdutt Padikkal made a strong contribution with the bat, scoring 167 and 44 after coming in as a replacement. The teams move to Colombo for the second Test starting Sunday, with India looking to seal the series and Sri Lanka needing a response on a surface that had already shown significant wear.
