Netherlands makes U-turn over Eurovision 2027 participation

What the report says
The Netherlands has reversed its plan to return to the Eurovision Song Contest and will now sit out the 2027 competition, according to BBC World News. Public broadcaster NPO said the move is linked to ongoing sensitivities around Israel’s participation, which it said has sparked division and debate in Dutch society. The broadcaster had previously signaled that the country would rejoin after earlier opting out of the 2026 event.
BBC World News reported that NPO made the decision after discussions with broadcasters about a possible comeback, but said it could not find a suitable format for participation. NPO chair Jet de Ranitz said the situation made it too early for the Netherlands to take part again, while also noting that the contest would still be shown on Dutch television. The BBC also reported that Eurovision organisers expressed regret but said they respected the decision.
The Netherlands was one of several countries that boycotted the most recent contest amid criticism related to Israel and the war in Gaza. In response to tensions around the competition, Eurovision organisers have already introduced changes to rules and voting. The Dutch decision adds to uncertainty around participation in future editions and reflects broader disagreements over the contest’s handling of political sensitivities.
