What the report says

Yahoo Finance reported that Netflix shares fell Friday after the company’s third-quarter revenue outlook missed investor expectations, deepening a decline that has nearly halved the stock since last summer. The article said the sell-off did not reflect a collapse in the streaming company’s operations, but rather a sharp reset in how the market values its future growth.

According to Yahoo Finance analysis using Bloomberg data, Netflix’s forward price-to-earnings ratio has dropped from levels above 70 at one point, and about 45 a year ago, to 18.5. The article noted that expected earnings have continued to rise, while revenue growth has cooled from about 16% to 13%, leading investors to pay less for each dollar of projected profit. Yahoo framed this as a “shareholder trap”: a company can keep expanding while its stock falls if expectations were previously too high.

The report also cited investor Michael Burry, who contrasted Netflix’s content model with companies such as Disney, Pixar and Warner Bros., arguing that older entertainment libraries may hold value longer than Netflix hits that require constant replacement. Yahoo said that comparison helps explain why the market may increasingly view Netflix like a media company rather than a high-growth technology stock.

Still, the article said Netflix has not been valued entirely like legacy media peers. Its earnings multiple remains above Disney, Fox and Comcast, while below Roku, Spotify and the broader technology sector. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Geetha Ranganathan said the weaker forecast and unchanged margin outlook overshadowed an otherwise solid quarter, underscoring the risk for highly valued stocks as earnings season begins.
