Museveni Raises Muhoozi Succession Question at NRM CEC Meeting

What the report says
President Yoweri Museveni has reportedly brought the issue of succession into formal discussion within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), presenting a paper on the subject to the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) at State House Entebbe. According to the Nile Post report, the meeting took place on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, and included attention on the reported presence of former Speaker Anita Among, who serves as the NRM’s second national vice chairperson for women.
The discussion comes as supporters of Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba continue to promote him as a possible contender in the 2031 presidential race. The report says Kasambya County MP Daudi Kabanda claimed on X that Museveni had endorsed Muhoozi, although the exact form of any backing and whether the CEC reached a formal resolution were not clear. Sources cited in the account said the paper was meant to set out the case for Muhoozi’s leadership, but the committee’s final position was not independently confirmed.
Museveni also reportedly made light of Muhoozi’s often controversial social media activity, saying he likes his son’s tweets. That remark added a personal note to a politically sensitive discussion, since Muhoozi has used social media to comment on politics and signal ambitions for higher office.
The report says some party members have raised concerns about the relationship between Muhoozi’s political network, the Patriotic League of Uganda, and the NRM, while others have argued that support for him is building within the ruling party. The succession debate matters because it suggests the question of post-Museveni leadership is moving closer to the centre of NRM internal politics, even though no formal decision has been publicly established.
