What the report says

Nile Post reports that President Yoweri Museveni has approved an official burial for Dr William Muguruka Sekyewunda, a former Bundibugyo District Member of Parliament, following his death at Kirudu Hospital in Kampala. The decision was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, by Minister for the Presidency Milly Babirye Babalanda, who is chairing the funeral organising committee.

According to the report, Sekyewunda died on Saturday, July 25, 2026, aged 77. The government said Museveni acted under the President’s executive authority as provided for in Uganda’s Constitution, citing Sekyewunda’s record as a medical doctor, politician, educator and community figure. He served as a directly elected MP for Bundibugyo in Uganda’s 4th Parliament from 1980 to 1985, a period that ended with the overthrow of President Milton Obote’s government by Gen Tito Okello.

Nile Post, citing government details, says Sekyewunda was born in Hakitengya Parish, Tokwe Sub County, Bundibugyo District, and earned a medical degree from Makerere University in 1976 before later obtaining a public health master’s degree from Cardiff University of Wales in 2011. His career included work at Kilembe Hospital, the Mulago Hospital Cancer Institute, Kampala International University’s Dar es Salaam campus, and the Bundibugyo District Service Commission.

A joint committee of government and family representatives is coordinating the burial programme. Events include a council session in Bundibugyo, a vigil at his ancestral home, and final rites on Friday, July 31, at Hakitengya Polytechnic Grounds before burial in Tokwe Sub County.
