Museveni backs Shs1.7bn priests’ housing project in Masaka

What the report says
President Yoweri Museveni has backed a Catholic housing project in Masaka Diocese with cash and construction materials as the church works to complete priests’ residences at St Donozio Sebugwawo Serinya Catholic Church. According to Nile Post, the contribution was announced during a fundraising drive held to support the Shs1.7 billion project.
Museveni’s support included Shs50 million in cash, 300 bags of cement and an earlier Shs20 million contribution toward a statue of the Virgin Mary. The donation was delivered through State House Comptroller Jane Barekye, while Museveni was represented at the event by Eng Joseph Sewava, the Coordinator for Buganda Affairs in the Office of the President. Church leaders said the project is expected to cost more than Shs1 billion and that about Shs600 million had already been raised.
The fundraising followed a Holy Mass led by Rev Fr Francis Mayanja, who encouraged Christians and government officials to act responsibly and avoid harmful conduct. The chairperson of the construction committee, Yiga Balironda Kool, said the funds would be properly accounted for and used for the intended purpose.
The development reflects ongoing efforts by the church to close the funding gap for the priests’ housing project, while also highlighting the President’s continued engagement with religious and community initiatives in Uganda.
