Mukono District Launches UGX 212M Renovation Project at Salaama School for the Blind

Mukono District Local Government, working with the Ministry of Education and Sports, has launched a UGX 212.7 million renovation project for the boys’ dormitory at Salaama School for the Blind in Ntenjeru-Kisoga, Mukono. Watchdog Uganda reported that the work has been assigned to the UPDF Engineering Brigade and is intended to improve living and learning conditions for visually impaired pupils.

According to the report, the project will include structural repairs and changes to the dormitory block, a chain-link perimeter fence for security, and a solar power installation to improve lighting and boarding safety. The ceremony was held on Thursday, August 5, 2026, and district officials used the occasion to call for close supervision and quality construction throughout the process.

Hon. Kalyango Tonny, speaking for the district leadership, praised central government support for vulnerable children and urged the contractor to meet durable standards. District officials also said their technical team would monitor the work, while the Commissioner for Special Needs Education, Sarah Kibooli Bugoosi, stressed that specialized infrastructure is important for inclusive education. School leaders welcomed the intervention but said more support is still needed, including classrooms, sanitation, security fencing, an on-site sickbay and healthcare staffing.

The project matters because it addresses immediate infrastructure needs at a school serving blind learners, while also reflecting wider gaps in education facilities across Mukono District, which officials said includes many schools facing shortages.
