Mubende Receives Climate Smart Agriculture Vehicle, Distributes 43,000 Hand Hoes to Farmers

Nile Post reports that Mubende District has received a vehicle from Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries to support work under the World Bank-funded Climate Smart Agriculture Programme. District officials said the vehicle will be used for supervision and monitoring of programme activities across Mubende, where transport limitations have affected the ability of extension teams to reach farmers. They also indicated that motorcycles are expected to be added later to strengthen field operations.

The handover was paired with the start of a new distribution of 43,000 hand hoes to farmers who had not benefited from earlier phases of a government support programme. According to the report, the latest allocation brings the total number of hoes supplied to Mubende to more than 130,000. The tools are intended to help raise farm output and household earnings in a district where agriculture is the dominant economic activity.

District Production Officer Fred Kisakye described the climate-smart programme as important for building farmers’ resilience to changing weather patterns and improving incomes through better farming methods and technical support. Principal Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Edson Ssali said the vehicle would improve supervision, accountability and service delivery as the programme expands, and said the hoes should support food production and poverty reduction among rural households.

Nile Post cited 2024 Uganda Bureau of Statistics figures showing Mubende has about 520,000 residents in 132,046 households across four constituencies. The district’s main farming activities include maize, beans and bananas, with livestock also providing income for many households.
