MTN MoMo injects Shs15m into Lwakataka’s motorsport comeback

MTN Mobile Money Uganda has pledged Shs15 million to support the “Sprint for Lwakataka,” a motorsport event centered on veteran rally driver Ponsiano Lwakataka’s return to competition as he marks 25 years on Uganda’s rally circuit. According to The Independent Uganda, the money will help with preparations for his rally car and also makes MTN MoMo the event’s official payments partner.

The event is scheduled for September 20, 2026, at Garuga, where fans are expected to gather for racing and a celebration of Lwakataka’s career. The report says the support is meant to ease some of the high costs associated with motorsport, including vehicle maintenance, spare parts, logistics and competition readiness. Lwakataka has built a following in Uganda and has competed in national events such as the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally.

The partnership also adds a digital ticketing option. Fans buying tickets through MoMo will pay Shs5,000, compared with Shs10,000 at the gate in cash, and MoMo users will have access to dedicated entry lanes outside the VVIP area. The company also said eligible purchases through the MoMo App on race day will receive a 20% discount.

MTN MoMo manager Dan Matovu said the deal is intended to support Ugandan sporting talent while improving convenience for spectators. The report presents the sponsorship as part of a broader shift toward corporate backing and digital payments in local sports, especially motorsport, where financing remains a major challenge.
