MTN Golf Series Gains Momentum as 181 Golfers Take Part in September Tee

MTN Uganda’s golf programme continued to expand in September with two events at Entebbe Club: the second leg of the MTN Pro Tee and the monthly MTN Quarterly Tee, which drew 181 golfers. The Pro Tee, held from September 8 to 11, featured 40 professional golfers, six amateurs and two lady professionals competing for a Shs20 million prize kitty. Ronald Rugumayo won the 72-hole event with a 16-under-par total, including a course-record 63 in the third round. Abraham Ainamani finished second and Rodell Gaita placed third. The series is run with the Uganda Professional Golfers Association and is intended to give players regular competition, prize opportunities and a season-long Order of Merit ahead of a December finale.

The Quarterly Tee followed on September 12 and attracted golfers across ladies’, men’s, seniors and guest categories. Sheila Ajok won overall, while other category winners included Florence Namugara, Richard Mucunguzi, Jovia Tugume, Peace Hellen, Suzan Knight, Saidi Kirarira and Baguma Musa. Nile Post said the strong participation reflects MTN’s broader support for golf, which began with amateur and corporate events at Entebbe Club in 2023 and has since extended to professional development.

MTN Uganda says the aim is to support talent at different stages and strengthen the sport’s competitive ecosystem. In general, such sponsorships can help local golf circuits grow by providing more regular tournaments and exposure, although the article does not provide wider impact figures.
