What the report says

Mpigi traders who have been moved from the old central market to a temporary site have been warned not to interfere with government equipment or enter restricted areas belonging to the Ministry of Works and Transport. The warning was delivered by Mpigi District Deputy Resident District Commissioner Shads Mwanje as relocation to the temporary location took place to make way for construction of a new market.

According to Nile Post, the traders were moved to the Ministry of Works offices in Mpigi while demolition of the former market continues and construction begins on the replacement facility. The temporary arrangement was set up to allow Hebron Investments Limited to start work on the modern market, which is being built under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Urban Development Programme.

Mwanje told traders to remain disciplined and to cooperate with others already operating at the site. He said the traders had been provided with a separate working area, while security personnel would monitor the premises to protect public property. He also warned that anyone found damaging or tampering with government equipment could face action.

The new Mpigi Central Market is expected to cost more than Shs70 billion and to serve more than 5,000 traders. Nile Post said the project is intended to improve trading conditions, support farmers and traders from surrounding districts such as Gomba and Butambala, and contribute to wider infrastructure improvements in Mpigi District.
