The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) has said it is committed to expanding cooperation with Mozambique and helping advance the country’s development priorities, according to an AIM report distributed by AllAfrica. The update said UNECA Executive Secretary Claver Gatete made the remarks in Maputo after meeting President Daniel Chapo on 5 August 2026.

Gatete said the visit was meant to identify areas where UNECA could provide stronger support for Mozambique’s development path. The discussion reportedly focused on the government’s plans for accelerating economic growth and structural transformation, as well as the President’s broader vision for the country.

Among the areas highlighted were energy, including hydropower expansion and natural gas use, which the government sees as important for industrialization. The two sides also discussed development corridors and transport links, with the Port of Beira described as important for regional trade and integration with SADC countries and East Africa.

The meeting also covered possible cooperation in minerals and agriculture, along with other sectors that could support jobs and more inclusive growth. In a broader context, UNECA is one of the UN’s regional economic bodies, and such engagements typically signal support for national development planning and coordination with other international partners.
