Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has told newly sworn-in Gaza provincial governor Alfeu Cuna to make the reconstruction of flood-hit areas a top priority in his administration. The remarks were reported by Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique and carried by AllAfrica from Maputo on 10 August 2026, during Cuna’s inauguration as governor of the southern province.

According to the report, Chapo said Gaza, which was badly affected by floods earlier in the year, needs urgent rebuilding of social and economic infrastructure to support broader development. He also urged the governor to work on local measures to reduce the impact of future flooding and to prepare for possible El Niño-related effects in the south of the country.

The president encouraged Cuna to spend time in the province’s districts, administrative posts, localities and villages and to consult residents directly. He also emphasized open dialogue and participatory governance, including coordination with local authorities, community and religious leaders, women, youth, the private sector and civil society.

The report notes that Cuna replaced Margarida Mapandzene, who resigned in July. It also says Gaza’s new governor has been tasked with supporting agriculture, livestock, manufacturing, tourism and water management, alongside sectors such as health, education, public works and employment. The emphasis on reconstruction reflects both immediate recovery needs and the longer-term challenge of strengthening provincial resilience to climate shocks.
