Mozambique: Over 1,200 Flee Their Homes Due to Terrorist Attacks

What the report says
The International Organization for Migration said at least 1,235 people were forced from their homes after attacks by Islamist militants in northern Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province between October 14 and 27, according to reporting distributed by AllAfrica from Agência de Informação de Moçambique. The displacement affected four districts: Mocímboa da Praia, Macomia, Muidumbe and Meluco.
The report said the displaced group included 316 households and a large number of women and children, along with pregnant women, older adults, people with disabilities and a few unaccompanied or separated children. Mocímboa da Praia accounted for the largest share of movements, while other significant displacement was recorded in Macomia and smaller numbers in the remaining districts.
Most of those uprooted were staying with host families, while others were moved to resettlement or accommodation centers, including sites in Macomia district. The IOM said the main humanitarian needs in the affected areas were food, shelter and healthcare.
The article also placed the latest displacement in a broader security context. It cited conflict-monitoring and UN sources saying attacks and related incidents in Cabo Delgado have continued to drive civilian flight, and that violence in the province increased in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.
