Zelenskyy hopes Democratic Congress will bring more US help for Ukraine

What the report says
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he hopes the Democratic Party’s gains in the US midterm elections will lead to more American support for Ukraine, according to Al Jazeera. He made the remarks after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, shifting the political landscape in Washington as the war with Russia continues.
In an interview with German broadcaster ZDF, Zelenskyy said Democrats have been more explicit than Republicans about backing Ukraine and rebuilding closer US-European ties. He suggested that stronger financial and military assistance from Congress could increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. The article notes that Zelenskyy has been trying to improve a tense relationship with President Donald Trump since an earlier Oval Office clash.
European leaders also reacted to the election results. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas urged the new Congress to keep supporting Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia. Some officials in Germany and elsewhere were more cautious, saying US policy may not change quickly because Trump remains in office. Others pointed to the broader trend of Europe seeking greater self-reliance in security.
Al Jazeera said the political debate comes as diplomacy continues. Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, is due to bring Ukrainian and Russian delegations together in Abu Dhabi for talks on ending the war and discussing security arrangements for Ukraine.
