MMA Fighting reported that former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen said he helped a Las Vegas security guard take an unexpected step toward an MMA debut after a brief encounter turned into a request for a major favor. In a July 27 Morning Report item, MMA Fighting summarized a story Sonnen told on his YouTube channel about meeting a guard identified as Frank Solomon during a recent trip to Las Vegas, where the guard helped Sonnen and his son find a restroom.

According to Sonnen’s account, after he casually said he owed Solomon a favor, Solomon soon asked to meet UFC CEO Dana White and pursue a UFC fight. Sonnen said he asked about Solomon’s background and was told he had wrestled in high school and competed in track and field. MMA Fighting noted Sonnen framed the story cautiously, given his reputation for colorful storytelling, but said Sonnen described being impressed that Solomon was willing to make the request.

Sonnen said he did not immediately try to arrange a meeting with White. Instead, he offered a more realistic path into the sport and said Solomon accepted the idea of starting lower in MMA rather than expecting direct UFC access. Sonnen then contacted Oregon promoter Kevin Keeney, owner of Full Contact Fighting Federation, a regional promotion Sonnen has been associated with and one that has featured future UFC fighters.

Per Sonnen’s telling, Solomon completed an application quickly and was booked for a fight in Oregon, with Sonnen saying he believed the date was Sept. 5 and hoped to attend. The report matters mostly as a human-interest MMA story: a chance meeting involving a well-known former fighter may have helped an aspiring competitor begin the long, uncertain route from local competition toward higher-level opportunities.
