BBC World News reported that Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said an object that struck a field in eastern Poland early Thursday was likely a Russian missile, though officials were still working to confirm its exact type and origin. The impact left a crater about 10 metres wide near Tarnawa Kolonia, a village roughly 100km from Ukraine, while Russia was carrying out strikes on Lviv in western Ukraine.

According to the BBC, Tusk made the comments at a specially convened meeting in Lublin, saying the available signs pointed to a Russian Kh-101 missile but that Poland wanted full certainty. Ukraine’s acting foreign minister, Andriy Sybiha, said earlier that a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile had entered Polish airspace during a large attack on Ukraine, calling it a violation of Nato airspace.

Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said around 20 objects were tracked near Polish airspace overnight, and specialists were conducting pyrotechnic analysis on debris from the Tarnawa Kolonia site. Poland’s military detected the object at about 03:40 local time and sent an F-16 to intercept it before it vanished from radar. Residents later reported a loud explosion, and police found the site about an hour afterward.

Tusk said there were no reported casualties, but Poland was treating the incident as serious. The BBC noted that Russian drones and one unarmed Russian missile have previously landed in Poland since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, making any cross-border incident a significant security concern for Poland and Nato.
