What the report says

Wakiso District Local Government reported that the Ministry of Health has praised the district for reaching 90.3% coverage in the recently completed five-day National Measles-Rubella Mass Immunisation Campaign. The commendation came during a post-campaign feedback meeting at the district headquarters, where Ministry of Health public health director Dr. Daniel Kyabayinze recognized the effort and urged continued community mobilisation and persuasion in future vaccination drives.

According to the district’s presentation, 518,876 children were vaccinated out of a target of 574,588, short of the national 95% benchmark but still described as a strong result. The district said it received 609,710 vaccine doses and ended the exercise with a balance of 90,834 doses. Deputy District Health Officer Betty Nabuganda credited the outcome to early planning, timely vaccine delivery, daily review meetings, supervision, political leadership involvement, and fuel support for fieldwork.

The report also noted that the campaign helped strengthen routine immunisation and improve Measles-Rubella surveillance. However, officials said the exercise faced setbacks including vaccine hesitancy, misinformation on social media, school closures, some children being absent, weak social mobilisation support, and logistical constraints. A two-day mop-up exercise was arranged for children missed during the main campaign.

District and ministry officials also raised operational concerns, including funding delays, hard-to-reach island areas, and the need for better support for supervisors and security teams in future campaigns.
