What the report says

Al Jazeera reported that Tuesday’s primaries in Michigan, Missouri, Kansas and Washington highlighted continuing tensions inside the Democratic Party, especially over US support for Israel, while also setting up several consequential November races. In Michigan, the Democratic Senate nomination remained too close to call early Wednesday, with progressive Abdul El-Sayed narrowly ahead of centrist Haley Stevens as counting continued. The winner will face Republican former Representative Mike Rogers in a state that could help decide control of the US Senate.

The Michigan contest has become a high-profile test of the party’s progressive and establishment wings. El-Sayed campaigned on Medicare for All, campaign finance reform and ending military aid to Israel, while Stevens stressed manufacturing, the economy and her electability in a swing state. In other Michigan races, Republican John James won the gubernatorial primary and Democrat William Lawrence won his party’s nomination in the 7th congressional district.

In Missouri, progressive Representative Cori Bush lost her Democratic primary rematch to Wesley Bell in a St Louis-area district that is considered safely Democratic. Voters there also rejected a state constitutional amendment. In Kansas, Adam Hamilton won the Democratic Senate primary and Cindy Holscher secured the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, while voters turned down a proposal to change how state Supreme Court justices are selected.

Washington state’s all-party primary showed incumbent Democrat Suzan DelBene leading her race, while Marie Gluesenkamp Perez advanced after defeating a progressive challenge in the 3rd district. Together, the results underscore how debates over Israel, party identity and broader economic concerns are shaping the 2026 election cycle.
