Mayanja Allowed to File New Evidence in Kyofa Election Petition

The High Court in Luweero has allowed former Nakaseke Central MP Allan Mayanja to submit supplementary evidence in his election petition against State Minister for Kampala Kabuye Kyofa. According to Nile Post, the application was filed at the start of the hearing and centered on a handwriting expert’s affidavit, which Mayanja’s legal team said could help show alleged tampering with declaration of results forms, or DR forms.

Justice Samuel Emokor permitted the filing despite an objection from Electoral Commission lawyer Nasser Serunjoji, who argued the evidence was being introduced after the deadline. The court ordered Mayanja’s side to file the supplementary material by September 18, with the respondents given until September 25 to reply. The judge also set the main hearing of the petition for October 12 to 16.

Mayanja, appearing in court with supporters and lawyers, said he believed he had won the election and was seeking justice over what he described as irregularities in the tallying process. Kyofa, represented by a separate legal team, said he was prepared to defend his victory. The case is one of several election petitions underway in the Greater Luweero region, where multiple parliamentary results are being challenged. In a broader sense, such petitions are a regular part of post-election dispute resolution in Uganda's courts, where losing candidates can contest results on procedural or evidentiary grounds.
