Mateta claims final year of Palace deal is invalid

What the report says
Jean-Philippe Mateta has challenged the final 10 months of his Crystal Palace contract, taking the issue to FIFA, according to BBC Sport. The France forward is disputing whether the optional extra year on his deal, which Palace activated in 2024, is legally binding. His current agreement is understood to run to June 2027, but Mateta is arguing that the extension should be void.
BBC Sport reports that the case was previously heard by an independent tribunal under Premier League rules, with no official public confirmation of the outcome. The outlet says Mateta then escalated the matter to FIFA, which ruled this week that it does not have jurisdiction to overrule the contract. That leaves the situation unresolved in public, although the article says the contract is understood to remain binding.
The dispute matters because, if Mateta were successful, he could potentially become a free agent sooner than planned. The 29-year-old has been an important player for Palace since joining from Mainz in 2021, initially on loan before signing permanently in 2022. He has scored 67 goals for the club and played a major role in recent success under former manager Oliver Glasner, including major cup and European triumphs.
BBC Sport also notes that Mateta had sought a move in January and came close to joining AC Milan, before that transfer collapsed after a knee issue. The report comes amid a difficult start to the season for Palace, with other squad concerns including injuries and transfer interest in key players.
