What the report says

Large crowds gathered in Gaza City for a mass funeral for 112 Palestinians whose bodies were recently recovered from the rubble of a residential block in the Sabra neighbourhood, according to BBC World News. The dead were mostly members of the Abu Sharia and Hassayna extended families, and the BBC said 40 children, 38 women and seven people with disabilities were among them. The remains had been found during a two-week recovery effort after the attack, which the report says took place in late 2023 during the early weeks of the Israel-Gaza war.

The BBC reported that the victims were killed in an Israeli strike on 22 November 2023, a day of heavy bombardment in Gaza City. It said the targeted building had been levelled and that some bodies were only now being brought out from under the debris. The Israeli military had not responded to the BBC’s request for information about the strike, the report added.

Recovery work in Gaza was carried out by Civil Defence teams operating under the Hamas-run interior ministry, with support from the International Committee of the Red Cross. The BBC said the ICRC provided equipment, training and excavators for the operation. The funeral, described in the report as the largest of its kind in Gaza, underscored the continuing toll of the war and the difficulty of accounting for the dead and missing amid widespread destruction.
