Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng and Sivasangari Subramaniam won gold medals at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, and in doing so became the first squash players to secure places at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, according to Al Jazeera. Their victories came on Sunday in the men’s and women’s finals, with both athletes successfully defending their titles.

Ng, the men’s world No. 18, beat India’s Abhay Singh in straight games at the Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena, while Subramaniam, ranked No. 5 in the world, also won comfortably against India’s Anahat Singh. Al Jazeera reported that neither Malaysian player dropped a game during their title runs, and that the two golds lifted Malaysia’s total to five and six gold medals at the Games.

The result matters because squash will make its Olympic debut in Los Angeles, and gold medal winners in the sport at these Asian Games earned automatic qualification. Al Jazeera noted that this made Ng the first Malaysian to qualify for the Olympics, while Subramaniam joined him soon after.

The broader Asian Games squash competition also produced milestones for other players.
