Malawi: Social Media Mocks Chief Justice Over K22m Court Opening - but Locals Say It's Life-Changing

Social media criticism has followed Malawi’s Chief Justice Rezine Mzikamanda after he presided over the commissioning of the rehabilitated Jenda Magistrate Court in Levi Jere area, Mzimba. The court project, reported by Nyasa Times and distributed by AllAfrica, cost K22 million and was opened on 15 September 2026.

According to the report, the Judiciary said the upgraded facility would serve more than 18,000 people in Jenda and nearby communities by bringing justice services closer to residents. Online commenters questioned whether the chief justice needed to attend such a relatively small project, while others argued that a senior judicial presence highlighted the importance of access to justice.

Mzikamanda defended the project at the ceremony, saying it would help fulfil the Judiciary’s plans by bringing people closer to justice. Local leaders and police officers were quoted as saying the court could have practical effects beyond symbolism: it may reduce long trips to Mzimba for court services, help speed up handling of cases, and improve responses to matters such as child marriage.

The debate reflects a broader tension between public expectations of high-level officials and the practical value of small-scale public infrastructure. In this case, the Judiciary’s message was that the worth of a court should be measured less by the size of the building and more by the access it provides to communities that previously had to travel farther for legal services.
