Malawi: Malawi's Single Mothers Battling Stigma and Financial Hardship Need Urgent Support, Say Experts

What the report says
Experts in Malawi are urging stronger social, economic and mental health support for single mothers, saying stigma and financial strain are limiting women’s opportunities and wellbeing. The comments were reported by Nyasa Times and distributed by AllAfrica, with the discussion tied to an upcoming women’s empowerment event in Lilongwe.
The Single Mother Empowerment Organisation is set to host the Single Moms Catch Up Date on August 15 at Afroma Terrace, BICC, under the theme “Reclaiming Her Dignity.” Founder Venia Awali Bakali said the gathering was created to help women rebuild confidence and self-worth, while also giving them practical tools in entrepreneurship, financial independence and personal development. The event is also intended to connect participants with networks that could lead to jobs or business prospects.
Bakali said single mothers in Malawi often face several pressures at once, including stigma, limited support systems, and restricted access to affordable mental health services. Mental health expert Dennis Mwafulirwa, as quoted in the report, said these burdens can affect other parts of life when women are also dealing with housing, food or income insecurity. He added that better support is needed not only from government and private actors, but also from families, communities and churches.
The article presents the issue as both a personal and social concern, arguing that reducing stigma and improving support for single mothers could strengthen households and communities more broadly.
