CNN reported that a brief lull in Middle East hostilities broke down after the US military said it intercepted what it called a surprise Iranian attack on American forces, followed by a new round of US strikes on Iran. US Central Command said the retaliatory operation was completed at 10 p.m. ET and involved a heavy wave of strikes on dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets, including command sites, missile and drone facilities, coastal defense and surveillance systems, and maritime assets.

Iranian state media reported explosions in southern Iran, including around Bandar Abbas, Kish Island and Qeshm Island. CNN cited Iranian broadcaster IRIB as saying rescue work was underway in Qeshm’s Chah Tangu neighborhood after a residential home was hit. A provincial crisis management official told IRIB that two children had been pulled from the rubble and taken for medical care, while rescuers continued searching for three relatives. CENTCOM did not provide a detailed target count beyond saying dozens of IRGC sites were struck.

The escalation followed remarks by US President Donald Trump, who warned that Iran would be hit forcefully after Tuesday’s attempted missile attack. CNN reported that CENTCOM said all Iranian missiles aimed at US forces were intercepted, while Jordan’s military said it intercepted five missiles. Separately, CNN said US and Saudi forces struck Iran-aligned Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq; the PMF reported at least 20 deaths, and an Iranian provincial official said four IRGC members were among those killed.

The renewed fighting also raised economic and shipping concerns. CNN reported oil prices rose, while commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained far below prewar levels. Shipping through Bab al-Mandeb was also affected after Iran-backed Houthis threatened Saudi-linked vessels seeking routes toward the Indian Ocean.
