Lira Deputy RCC Warns of Family Wrangles Over Property After Death

Families in Lira City were urged to sort out property ownership and succession matters while they are still alive, amid concerns that inheritance disputes can fracture households after a death. The message was delivered by Odongo Stephen, the Deputy Resident City Commissioner for Lira City East Division, during a community sensitisation event on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Mayor’s Garden.

According to Dokolo Post, the meeting was organised by the Regional Office of Uganda’s Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and focused on inheritance, estate management, succession planning, and the risks of dying without a valid will. Odongo said families that have built homes, bought land, and raised children together can still fall into conflict if they do not plan ahead and understand the law.

He encouraged residents to discuss succession openly, list their assets, and prepare wills where appropriate so their wishes are legally protected. He also framed the issue as one of dignity, responsibility, and community stability, saying orderly succession helps protect both property and family unity. Simon Peter Muyomba, the Principal State Attorney heading the ministry’s Lira Regional Office, said the campaign would be extended to other districts in the Lango sub-region.

The broader context is that inheritance disputes are common in many communities when estates are left unclear. The ministry’s outreach aims to increase public awareness of Uganda’s succession laws and reduce family and legal conflict.
