Lincoln Axarya: The Ugandan Designer Giving Modern Fashion a New Spin

What the report says
Ugandan designer Lincoln Axarya is using his Kampala-based label, AXARYA, to build a contemporary luxury fashion brand rooted in clean tailoring, structured silhouettes and what he describes as quiet confidence. According to Nile Post, the brand started as a menswear line about two years ago and later expanded into gender-inclusive clothing after women began buying pieces from the men’s collections for their fit and construction.
Axarya’s approach focuses on what he calls affordable luxury: producing refined garments in Uganda at a level he believes can compete with imported fast fashion. The article says he sees a gap in the local market between casual streetwear and formal wear, and has tried to fill it with well-proportioned pieces made in small batches. He also pointed to the practical challenges of making fashion in Uganda, including fabric access, production costs and the need to prove quality rather than rely on appeals to buy local.
Beyond his own label, Axarya has taken part in brand collaborations, including work connected to Johnnie Walker’s Afro Exchange campaign and a special-edition apparel project. He also served as lead designer for an Afro Exchange showcase in Kampala in April, which he said highlighted how fashion can intersect with broader creative industries.
His next major appearance is scheduled for September 5, when he is set to open the VIP Grand Finale runway at Uganda International Fashion Week at Kampala Serena Hotel. For Axarya, the larger goal is to show that a globally relevant African luxury brand can be built in Kampala while retaining a distinct Ugandan identity.
