Liberia: Moj Seeks Jeety's Backing for Prison Rehabilitation

AllAfrica, carrying a Liberian Observer report from Monrovia dated July 28, 2026, reported that Liberia’s Ministry of Justice is seeking deeper private-sector support for prison rehabilitation. The appeal was directed in particular to businessman and philanthropist Upjit Singh Sachdeva, widely known as Jeety, during his annual July 26 Independence Day food distribution at Monrovia Central Prison.

Assistant Minister for the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation Gabriel F. Ndupellar, speaking for Justice Minister and Attorney General Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, said Liberia’s correctional system should put greater emphasis on rehabilitation rather than confinement alone. According to the report, the ministry has prepared a rehabilitation proposal and plans further discussions with Jeety on possible support for skills training, empowerment and reintegration programs for inmates.

Ndupellar said inmates include people with abilities that could benefit society if developed, and he linked rehabilitation to reducing repeat offenses and helping former prisoners return to their communities with better prospects. He also pointed to detainees awaiting court action and people held over financial obligations linked to minor offenses as examples of vulnerable inmates needing targeted intervention.

A representative speaking for Jeety described the Independence Day outreach as a message that incarcerated people remain part of Liberia’s national community. The report frames the ministry’s request as part of a broader push for partnerships among government, businesses, civil society and humanitarian actors to ease pressure on state resources and expand vocational and reintegration opportunities in correctional facilities.
