What the report says

Liberia is preparing to take over the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council in December, according to Information Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah, who spoke at a regular briefing in Monrovia on Tuesday. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is expected to travel to the United States during the month and personally chair some Council meetings.

Piah said the government has mapped out diplomatic and commemorative events around the presidency. Those include an October 26 United Nations Day observance, a diplomatic briefing and reception on October 30, and a planned November 17 launch of Liberia’s Feminist Foreign Policy. He also said a South African delegation is due in Liberia from November 16 to 18 to discuss the country’s proposed peace, reconciliation and memorial museum.

The minister described the Council role as a notable milestone for Liberia, which has long depended on UN peacekeeping support and is now set to participate more directly in decisions on international peace and security. He said the upcoming month offers a chance to emphasize Liberia’s peacebuilding record and its broader diplomatic engagement, including through regional bodies such as ECOWAS.

Piah also said the government intends to unveil a National War Memorial honoring an estimated 250,000 people who died in Liberia’s civil wars, although no date has been announced. The reported plans underscore how the presidency will be used to highlight both international diplomacy and domestic reconciliation efforts.
