Liberia: Liberia Formally Indicts 12 in Record $317.68m Cocaine Case, Alleging a Smuggling Scheme That Reaches Back to 2024 but Big Names Noticeably Missing

AllAfrica, carrying a FrontPageAfrica report from Monrovia, says Liberian authorities have filed formal charges against 12 people in what is described as the country’s largest cocaine case, involving an estimated US$317.68 million seizure. The writ of arrest and police charge sheet were filed at the Paynesville City Magisterial Court before Stipendiary Magistrate William G. Saygah, based on a Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency complaint prosecuted by Atty. Emmanuel Tarr of the Ministry of Justice.

The named defendants include Johann David Garces Grajales, Srdan Seles, Edison Brown, Mohammed Alpha Bah, Jammel V. Jallah, Christopher Sayee, Christian L. Nyantee, Caycee Nelson, Nana Tom, Abednego, and two men identified only as Sekou and Michael. They face drug importation, trafficking, possession, conspiracy, facilitation, solicitation and firearm-related counts under Liberia’s Penal Law. The charge sheet also says other suspects remain unidentified.

According to the report, prosecutors allege the scheme began in 2024 with an aircraft brought into Liberia under the cover of a commercial transport venture at Roberts International Airport. The filing claims that farmland and a supposed fishing operation near Royesville and the Po River were used to support cocaine movement. Authorities say the July 21, 2026 raid at a VOA Community residence off the RIA Highway recovered 157 bags containing 3,971 “plates” of cocaine, along with phones, GPS and satellite equipment, a drone, cash, a firearm and other items. FrontPageAfrica noted it was seeking clarification on the precise weight versus plate count.

The case matters because it broadens Liberia’s ongoing drug-trafficking investigation and raises questions about alleged access to airport and security-linked networks. Some figures mentioned in the narrative, including an airport operations official, were not listed among the charged defendants. No pleas have been entered, and the accusations remain unproven unless established in court.
