Lebanese soldiers injured while Israeli troops intrude on southern town

Three Lebanese soldiers were wounded on Saturday while clearing unexploded ordnance in Zawtar al-Gharbiyah, a village in southern Lebanon near the Israeli border, according to the Lebanese army. The incident came after local officials and Lebanon’s state news agency said Israeli troops had moved into the area overnight and built an earth barrier near the town square. An AFP correspondent reportedly saw the barrier blocking a road at the eastern entrance to the village.

The village mayor, Abed Ezzeddine, said residents were surprised by the structure and noted that the Lebanese army had only recently deployed there as part of a broader arrangement tied to the border ceasefire framework. A Lebanese military source described the Israeli move as a breach of that accord, while the Israeli military said it was not aware of the reported event in that location.

Al Jazeera also reported wider fighting and military activity along the frontier, including shelling in Mansouri and continued incursions or drone strikes in other southern towns. The reporting said these developments are taking place as Lebanon and Israel continue US-mediated talks over border issues and the future disarmament framework involving Hezbollah. More generally, the south Lebanon border area has remained highly volatile despite ceasefire efforts, with damaged roads, rubble clearance and mine removal shaping conditions for returning residents.

Separately, Israel said one of its soldiers was wounded in a different border-area incident on Saturday.
