What the report says

A large fire swept through a fuel storage depot near Sulaimaniyah in Iraq’s Kurdish region on Monday, injuring several people and destroying dozens of fuel tankers, according to Al Jazeera’s reporting. The blaze started just before midnight at a warehouse in the Tanjaro area, which local outlets described as one of the province’s key fuel supply sites.

Al Jazeera said footage it verified showed heavy flames and thick smoke rising over the area. Local officials and media outlets reported that emergency crews and security forces responded as the fire intensified and that multiple explosions were heard as the flames spread through the facility. The deputy director general of Sulaimaniyah told Rudaw that no one was killed and that about 20 people were hurt, with injuries described as minor. Shafaq News separately reported two burn cases, including one that required hospital care.

The cause of the fire had not been determined, and authorities had not yet released a full damage assessment. Shafaq News, citing a local source, said the fire destroyed dozens of tankers and consumed more than 3 million litres of fuel, though those figures were not independently confirmed in the article.

The fire was later brought under control, according to the deputy governor of Sulaimaniyah. Civil defence teams led the response, with crews in nearby Erbil said to be on standby if needed. Al Jazeera reported that local fuel market representatives did not expect an immediate rise in petrol prices, though the broader impact remained unclear.
