The New York Post reported that families in Ladera Ranch, an Orange County master-planned community, are pressing for deeper scrutiny after California Cancer Registry figures showed fewer than 11 Ewing sarcoma cases in the community during the 10-year period ending in 2021. Parents say the data does not settle their concerns because additional diagnoses have been reported since then, and they fear environmental exposures, including years of pesticide and herbicide use, could be relevant. Health officials have not established a connection between chemicals and the illnesses.

The concern centers on Ewing sarcoma, a rare bone and soft-tissue cancer. The article cited the American Cancer Society as saying it affects about 200 to 240 children and teens nationwide each year. Families named in the report include those of Lily Dalton, 23, who died in January, and Brody Matteson, 17, who the article says died in March 2026 after the cancer was found on his spine. The article also noted concern about other rare cancers, including synovial sarcoma diagnosed in 18-year-old Haven Keetch.

Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley told CBS she wants updated numbers and a map of county cases, saying there were 35 Orange County cases as of 2021 but that she had not obtained location-specific information.
