The Mercury News reported that San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan made a brief appearance Sunday at the team’s first training camp practice in Santa Clara while recovering from a July 14 car collision in Palo Alto. Shanahan, beginning his 10th camp as 49ers head coach, watched for about 45 minutes from the defensive backfield alongside general manager John Lynch rather than running the session. The report said he is recovering from a concussion and a broken left hand, and wore sunglasses, a cap and a small cast.

Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster has temporarily taken on a leading role, including addressing the team after practice and speaking with reporters. Foerster said the staff had discussed how to divide responsibilities if Shanahan could not handle his usual workload, with offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak and defensive coordinator Raheem Morris also helping fill gaps. Kubiak relayed offensive calls during practice, while Morris managed the defense.
