What the report says

CFAO Mobility Kenya has recalled selected Toyota vehicles sold in Kenya and manufactured between 2001 and 2017 because of defective airbags. The recall was reported by Capital FM and distributed by AllAfrica, with the Association of Kenya Insurers saying the company has been working with insurers on the replacement campaign.

According to the report, the airbags involved are linked to a wider global safety problem associated with Takata, the Japanese parts maker whose defective inflators were tied to injuries and deaths in several countries. The Kenya insurer association said the problem has caused accidents, fatalities, property damage and injury claims internationally. The article also says CFAO Mobility presented the recall at an underwriting forum in April 2026, after which affected vehicles were identified and details shared with insurance managers.

The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner has approved sharing affected customers’ contact details for follow-up, the Association of Kenya Insurers said. Insurers have been asked to help by alerting customers with affected vehicles and passing on contact information so CFAO can complete the recall process.

The development matters because it brings a long-running global vehicle safety issue into the Kenyan market and could affect owners of older Toyota models still in use. It also underscores the role of insurers and regulators in helping trace and notify vehicle owners during safety recalls.
