Kenya: Ruto - 2027 Election Will Be a Vote Against Tribalism, Marginalisation

President William Ruto used a development tour in Migori County, in Kenya’s Nyanza region, to argue that the 2027 general election should be treated as a test of national unity, inclusivity and fair resource sharing. According to Capital FM, the president said voters would have a chance to reject tribalism, marginalisation and divisive politics, and he urged rivals to present concrete plans rather than rely on ethnic appeals or personal attacks.

Ruto also defended his administration’s “Broad-Based Government” arrangement involving the United Democratic Alliance and the Orange Democratic Movement, saying it was meant to strengthen cohesion and ensure development reaches all parts of the country. He pointed to government spending on roads, electricity, water, agriculture, education and affordable housing as evidence of that approach.

During the visit, he launched and inspected several projects in Migori, including road works, an electricity transmission line and substation, and last-mile connectivity schemes. The report said these projects are aimed at improving transport links, power supply and access to markets and services in the county. Ruto also cited reforms in the sugar sector, including the revival of Sony Sugar Company, and said farmers there would receive a bonus for the first time next month.

The article added that Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi and several county leaders backed the call for development-focused politics, while also supporting the government’s emphasis on spreading resources more evenly across Kenya.
