Kenya: Hustler Fund Disbursements Hit Sh90bn As Repeat Borrowing, Savings Rise

AllAfrica, carrying a Capital FM report from Nairobi dated July 29, 2026, reported that Kenya’s government says the Hustler Fund has disbursed Sh90 billion since it was launched. The state-backed credit programme is presented by the government as a way to widen access to affordable loans for micro and small enterprises, informal workers and other borrowers who may face barriers in the conventional banking system.

Cooperatives and MSME Development Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya gave the figures after briefing President William Ruto at State House on the fund’s performance, according to the report. Oparanya said the scheme has reached 28 million borrowers through three products: Personal Loan, Bridge Loan and Hustler Groups. The facility is currently issuing about Sh50 million in loans per day, the ministry said.

The ministry also reported that repeat borrowing has grown, with roughly 10 million borrowers taking additional loans. It said 4.5 million users have achieved A and B credit scores after making repayments on time, a development the government expects to help qualifying borrowers access higher loan limits. Borrowers have also accumulated Sh7 billion in savings under the programme, which officials say supports the fund’s savings and credit goals.

The Hustler Fund is one of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s signature financial-inclusion initiatives. While the latest figures point to rising usage, the Capital FM report noted that the programme’s longer-term impact will depend on continued repayment, sound credit management and whether the loans help borrowers expand or stabilize their businesses.
