Kenya: Disregard Fake Kenyans.Co.Ke Graphic Falsely Attributing Mt Kenya MP Rankings to Infotrak

What the report says

AllAfrica, republishing an Africa Check report by Grace Gichuhi dated 21 July 2026, said a Facebook graphic purporting to rank the 10 worst-performing MPs in Kenya’s Mt Kenya region is not authentic. The image used Kenyans.co.ke branding and claimed the rankings were based on research by polling and market research firm InfoTrak, with a date of 1 July 2026.

According to Africa Check, the graphic listed Kiambu Town MP John Machua Waithaka at 6%, Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge at 10%, and Gatundu North MP Elijah Kururia and Chuka MP Patrick Munene at 13%, among others. Africa Check said it found no InfoTrak report matching that claim. InfoTrak’s CountyTrak Performance Index 2026, released on 1 July, assessed elected leaders using measures such as service delivery, accessibility, responsiveness and leadership, based on interviews with 87,286 respondents from January to May.

The fact-check found that the circulated image conflicted with InfoTrak’s published data. For example, it assigned Igembe North MP Julius Taitumu 20%, while the official report gave him 56%, and it put Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri at 19.5%, compared with 49% in the report. Africa Check also noted that Kururia was not listed in the official report, which excluded MPs without published scores.

Africa Check cited spelling errors and the absence of the graphic from Kenyans.co.ke’s verified social media accounts as further warning signs. The issue matters because Kenya is approaching the 2027 general election, and Mt Kenya is a major voting bloc where misleading political polling graphics could shape public perceptions.
