Kenya: AI Plot to Divide Opposition Ahead of 2027 Exposed

A threat intelligence report from Anthropic says an AI-driven influence operation targeted senior Kenyan opposition figures and promoted Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi in the run-up to the 2027 general election. The report, cited by Capital FM and distributed by AllAfrica, says the activity centered on former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, while also pushing messages that the United Opposition was splintering.

According to the account, the campaign used Anthropic’s Claude model to generate large batches of social media posts designed to look like ordinary grassroots commentary rather than coordinated political messaging. The report says the operator used pre-written talking points, hashtags and templates, and also applied a similar workflow to marketing campaigns for Kenyan retail brands under a separate persona.

Anthropic said the operation was identified as GTG-54004 and appeared to be a domestic Kenyan influence effort, with no evidence presented that it was tied to the government or publicly funded by it. The company also said the network’s reach was limited and that it was contained within fake accounts on a single platform, without affecting real users in a meaningful way.

The findings highlight a broader concern about how generative AI can be used to scale political messaging quickly and make coordinated campaigns appear organic. Anthropic said it banned the accounts involved and added detection measures after the activity was uncovered through threat intelligence shared by OpenAI.
