Kenya: 121 Scholars Get Sh3bn Scholarships From Equity Group to Study Abroad

Equity Group has awarded scholarships to 121 scholars from East Africa through its Equity Leaders Program, enabling them to study at universities in several regions around the world. The announcement, reported by Capital FM and distributed by AllAfrica, was made in Nairobi and includes students from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to the report, 86 of the recipients are from Kenya, 29 from Rwanda, four from Uganda and two from the DRC. The scholars have been admitted to 63 universities in 16 countries across North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The article also says 20 of this year’s awardees gained admission to Ivy League institutions, including Princeton University and Harvard University, bringing the total number of ELP scholars accepted into Ivy League schools to 240.

Equity Group Foundation Executive Chairman and Equity Group Managing Director and CEO Dr James Mwangi said the program is intended to help develop young African leaders and build long-term capacity for the continent. The report also quoted a European Union delegation official in Kenya encouraging the scholars to use the opportunity to grow, learn and return with skills that can support transformation at home.

The piece adds that 44 additional ELP scholars have been shortlisted and interviewed for possible overseas government-sponsored undergraduate scholarships, including opportunities linked to Türkiye and Romania.
