What the report says

Lydia Nakandi, the widow of Ugandan comedian Yokana Mbuuse, known as Kapere Lufotose, has described the pressure her husband said he felt over rent arrears shortly before he collapsed and died. According to Sqoop Uganda, she said he was facing a demand for Shs320,000 in overdue rent and had been told to leave their home if the money was not paid. She linked the episode to the strain he was already under, saying he had been struggling to find performance work and was worried about supporting the family.

Nakandi gave the account during Kapere’s funeral service at the National Unity Platform offices in Kavule. She said the couple had been preparing to attend their child’s school visitation day when the rent collector repeatedly called. Despite the distress, she said Kapere appeared cheerful at the school, where he danced for pupils and family members before later asking for their boda boda rider as they prepared to leave.

She said he soon began to weaken, slumped and later stopped speaking. People tried CPR before he was taken to a clinic and then another hospital, where doctors later confirmed his death. Sqoop Uganda reported that police had previously said a post-mortem would determine the cause. Nakandi used the funeral to appeal for help raising the couple’s children, saying resources were limited after his death. The report also placed his death on November 1, 2026.
