Mixed Reactions as UPDF Announces Arrest of Retired Gen Peter Elwelu in Soroti

What the report says
Watchdog Uganda reports that security forces have arrested retired Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu in Soroti City, based on a statement posted on X by UPDF Acting Director of Defence Public Information Col. Chris Magezi. The announcement quickly prompted mixed reactions online and across Teso, with some people backing the security operation while others reacted with skepticism and sarcasm.
According to the UPDF statement cited by the publisher, Elwelu was described as a fugitive linked to alleged subversive activity and supposed plans to destabilize the Teso sub-region. Magezi also said security forces had recovered firearms, military fatigues and pickup trucks said to be connected to him, and that he would face charges in court. Watchdog Uganda noted that the claims spread rapidly on social media and in local news circles.
The report adds that the arrest comes after earlier public accusations by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who had accused Elwelu of betrayal and said ranks had been stripped from him. Elwelu’s family has rejected the rebellion allegations, with his wife previously saying he had left home to pray and denying any role in insurrection. The publication also says Elwelu, a retired senior officer from Teso who once commanded the 2016 operation at the Rwenzururu palace, is expected to appear before the General Court Martial, though authorities had not yet released a charge sheet or confirmed his detention facility.
