Kane first Englishman to win Germany's player of the year award

What the report says
Harry Kane has been named Germany’s footballer of the year for 2026, making him the first English player to win the award, according to BBC Sport Football. The Bayern Munich striker was recognised after a standout season in which he scored 61 goals in all competitions, helping Bayern secure a domestic league-and-cup double and reach the Champions League semi-finals.
BBC Sport said the award is organised by Kicker magazine and voted on by 695 members of the German sports journalists association. Kane won with 272 votes, ahead of Bayern team-mate Michael Olise, who finished second with 203. The result adds to a growing list of individual honours for Kane, who has also been named England’s footballer of the year.
The recognition comes as Kane remains one of the leading contenders for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, due to be awarded in London in October. If he wins, BBC Sport noted, he would join Kevin Keegan as the only Englishmen to claim the prize while playing for a German club. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl praised Kane’s output, while Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was also honoured separately as coach of the year.
Kane and Kompany are due to be celebrated at Bayern’s Bundesliga opener against VfB Stuttgart. BBC Sport added that Bayern started the new campaign by beating Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup and that Kane had already collected the 2026 Golden Shoe for topping Europe’s scoring charts last season.
