What the report says

Variety reports that Sony has released the trailer for “Jumanji: Open World,” the third entry in the studio’s rebooted “Jumanji” film series. The preview marks the return of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan as the central ensemble, with the film continuing the action-comedy and body-swap premise that powered the two earlier installments.

The new movie follows 2017’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” and 2019’s “Jumanji: The Next Level,” which Variety says earned more than $1.7 billion combined worldwide. The modern films reworked the 1995 “Jumanji,” which starred Robin Williams and a young Kirsten Dunst, by shifting the story from a magical board game to a video game world where teenagers inhabit adult avatars.

Variety says the returning cast also includes Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Marin Hinkle, Bebe Neuwirth, Lamorne Morris and Rhys Darby. Dan Hildebrand and Jack Jewkes are joining the ensemble. Jake Kasdan, who directed the previous two reboot films, is back as director and co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. Producers include Matt Tolmach, Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Kasdan.

The release date has shifted from Dec. 11 to Christmas, according to Variety. That move places “Jumanji: Open World” in a crowded holiday box-office period, shortly after the planned Dec. 18 openings of “Dune: Part Three” and “Avengers: Doomsday.”
