July’s full buck moon is peaking soon. Here’s what to know - CNN

What the report says
CNN reports that July’s full moon, commonly known as the buck moon, is set to be visible this week and will reach peak illumination at 10:36 a.m. ET on Wednesday, citing The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Because that peak occurs during daylight for many U.S. viewers, the moon should still appear nearly full on the nights around the peak, giving sky-watchers more than one chance to see it.
Noah Petro, who leads a planetary science lab at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, told CNN that viewing conditions do not require special equipment, but darker surroundings and an unobstructed sky will help. CNN also cited EarthSky in noting that the moon will sit lower in the Northern Hemisphere than it will for observers in the Southern Hemisphere, following a path similar to the sun’s winter arc.
The name “buck moon” is tied to the season when male deer grow antlers, according to CNN’s account of The Old Farmer’s Almanac. CNN also noted that different Indigenous traditions use other names, including Dakota and Cree references connected to seasonal changes. In parts of the Northeast and Upper Midwest, wildfire smoke from Canada could give the moon a redder or more orange appearance by scattering moonlight, similar to how smoke can alter daytime sky color.
CNN framed the event as a simple way for the public to engage with astronomy at a time of renewed interest in lunar exploration. The report also lists five remaining full moons in 2026, including supermoons in November and December, when the moon is expected to appear especially bright and large.
