Israeli air strike kills one in northern Gaza

An Israeli air strike killed one person and wounded five others in northern Gaza, according to authorities cited by Al Jazeera. Gaza’s civil defence agency said the strike hit a three-wheeled tuk-tuk near the Western Roundabout in Beit Lahiya on Wednesday, in what it described as the first Israeli aerial bombardment in more than a week. The vehicle was reportedly carrying people linked to municipal maintenance work.

The dead man was identified as Mohanad Saada, and the injured were taken to al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Civil defence spokesperson Mahmoud Basal said Saada had been returning from repairs to a water well damaged in earlier fighting. Al Jazeera also reported other strikes the same day, including a drone attack in Khan Younis that wounded a father and critically injured his son, and artillery fire near the Bureij refugee camp.

The Israeli military said the Beit Lahiya strike targeted a Hamas commander it said was planning attacks against Israeli forces. Al Jazeera noted that, despite a recent lull in major air raids, Israel has continued shelling and drone attacks on the ground. The report also placed the strike in the context of continuing war-related violence in Gaza and recent political developments, including Israel’s rejection of the latest version of a US-backed peace proposal.
