Israel’s ‘Crimson Thread’ military barrier is strangling the West Bank

Al Jazeera reports that Palestinians in Ras al-Ahmar, in the occupied West Bank’s northern Jordan Valley, say Israel’s new “Crimson Thread” military barrier is isolating communities from roads, water and farmland. In a July 18 report from the area, the outlet describes closed gates, Israeli patrols and a remaining dirt route that has turned a short trip from the main road into a journey that can take hours. Resident Thaer Bisharat told Al Jazeera that daily errands and access to nearby villages have become severely restricted.

According to Al Jazeera, the project was announced in 2025 and its initial section includes a trench and military road of about 22km between the Ein Shibli and Tayasir checkpoints. Israel says the barrier is intended to stop weapons smuggling from Jordan, but the report notes the route runs inside the West Bank rather than along the Jordanian border. Al Jazeera says a June Israeli Supreme Court ruling allowed construction to proceed, after which Israeli authorities advanced land seizure orders and trench digging.

The report cites damage or destruction to irrigation pipes, wells, greenhouses and farmland, as well as confiscations of tractors and water tanks. It also quotes Dror Etkes of the Israeli NGO Kerem Navot, who said the route both limits Palestinian access to land east of the barrier and connects settlements with a new outpost. The Colonisation and Wall Resistance Commission told Al Jazeera that Israel issued 49 military land-seizure orders in the first half of 2026.

Local officials and residents cited by Al Jazeera say settler violence, military closures and loss of agricultural access have displaced families and threatened livelihoods. The broader significance is that the barrier could deepen the fragmentation of Palestinian areas in the Jordan Valley, a region central to farming and long contested under Israeli occupation.
