Iran, Houthis strike tankers as US bombing continues: What’s the latest?

Al Jazeera reported that the United States carried out another round of strikes on Iran early Thursday, marking a 12th consecutive night of bombing, while Iran and Yemen’s Houthis claimed attacks affecting key shipping routes in the Gulf and Red Sea. US Central Command said the latest strikes targeted Iranian military assets, including maritime capabilities, missile and drone storage, coastal surveillance and air defence sites, but did not identify all locations hit.

According to the report, Iranian and local media said US strikes hit sites in Khuzestan, Hormozgan, Bushehr and other areas. A provincial official told Iranian state broadcaster IRIB that two people were killed near Shalamcheh, with local media reporting 11 injuries. Al Jazeera also cited reports of damage to naval search-and-rescue vessels in Hormozgan and a power outage in Bushehr after an attack near a substation.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it retaliated against US assets in Kuwait and Jordan, claiming strikes on missile defence systems, drone facilities, radar equipment, fuel tanks and helicopter infrastructure. Those claims were presented by the IRGC as attacks on US-controlled military sites rather than on Kuwaiti or Jordanian sovereignty; Al Jazeera’s article did not include independent confirmation of the full extent of the damage.

At sea, the IRGC said an explosion set a tanker on fire in the Strait of Hormuz and warned that tankers could not pass without coordination with Iran. Separately, the Houthis claimed missile and drone attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, with Saudi state media confirming the Encelia was hit. The developments matter because disruption now spans both Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb corridor, two strategically important routes for global energy and commercial shipping.
