An Indian court has sentenced journalist Tarun Tejpal to 10 years in prison after finding him guilty of raping a junior colleague, according to Al Jazeera’s report from 6 August 2026. The ruling was issued by the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court and also included a fine of $5,250. The court gave Tejpal two weeks to surrender, and the Goa police investigator who led the case said he would be taken into custody if he does not comply.

Tejpal, the former editor of Tehelka magazine, had been accused of raping a female colleague in a hotel lift during a magazine event in Goa in 2013. Al Jazeera reported that the new ruling overturned an earlier 2021 acquittal by a Goa court, which had dismissed rape, sexual harassment and wrongful restraint charges. The Goa government had challenged that acquittal, leading to the appeal.

Tejpal has denied the allegations and said he will appeal to the Supreme Court. He also told the court he believed he was a political victim.
